Ever wondered what the world of Rob Roy MacGregor or Robert Burns really looked like?

Take a walk with a difference and discover what remains from one of the most romanticised periods in Scottish history.

Join local archaeologist Dr Gavin Lindsay as he explores a short stretch of the Cateran Trail, hunting for evidence of the farming settlements that once filled Glenshee.

An unscripted first time visit with no pre-arranged stops, this walk promises open-ended exploration, the thrill of discovery and live interpretation in true National Geographic style.

Grade of walk: Medium – suitable for people with at least average fitness and some country walking experience, including 12 – 16 year olds with accompanying adult. Approx 2km along undulating waymarked track and occasional open grazed terrain.

Assembly point: Vehicle owners should park in the hard-standing area immediately east of the bridge over the Shee Water where the road splits to the Compass Outdoor Centre and Invereddrie Farm (NGR: NO 1328,6812) (exit the A93 c.2 miles south of Spittal of Glenshee). Public transport and pedestrian attendees should email [email protected] in advance to arrange car share from Blairgowrie or Spittal of Glenshee.

Please bring snack rations and drinking water, you may also wish to carry a packed lunch in case of tangents. Be prepared for Scotland’s varied weather with clothing for wet/cold and warm/dry conditions. Please wear sturdy footwear with ankle support suitable for mixed upland terrain. There are no public toilets on this route. Risk assessment and route plan available on request.

This session is part of The Cateran Ecomuseum’s Travel For All Our Tomorrow’s programme which offers a number of free, active travel for leisure experiences co-designed with local communities and led by local people and which aims to encourage more people in the Tayside region to enjoy what is on their doorstep, rather than increase their carbon footprint by travelling further afield.
