Cateran Ecomuseum

We’re looking for volunteer community scientists and historians from the Tayside area to work with us from August 2023 to April 2024 on four ground-breaking projects in the Cateran Ecomuseum that will investigate how we managed our rivers, bogs and lochans in the past and how this knowledge might help us take better care of them in the future.

At this session, environmental scientist Dr Richard Tipping and landscape historian Christopher Dingwall will introduce the four projects:

• Flax & Flood: an environmental history of the Blairgowrie textile mills
• Flood & Flow: reconstructing flood histories for the River Isla
• Peat & Productivity: discovering a lost landscape around Meigle
• Marl Mania: exploring the basis for the 18thc agricultural revolution in Strathmore

This is a great opportunity for a young person over 16 or someone who is not currently employed to gain some valuable experience and training, perhaps in a field you are already interested in pursuing or in an area you are keen to move into such as heritage, nature restoration and climate action, or to get involved in a community-based project.

It’s also a chance for riparian land owners, farmers and estate workers and those involved in regional and national community resilience, climate action and nature restoration work to learn about how we managed our landscapes in the past and how this knowledge might help us take better care of them in the future.

This project is part of The Cateran Ecomuseum’s innovative Museum of Rapid Transition programme which aims to show how the story of our past can help guide the story of our future, bringing people together and enhancing a sense of place, stewardship and community resilience.
